Notes on the design and construction of this site.

Every visual and structural decision documented below. This page serves as both a record and a rationale, a way of making the invisible choices visible.

Numbering System

Everything is numbered. Zero-padded, parenthesized, drawn from archival cataloguing conventions. The format shifts by context but the logic stays consistent. I like numbered lists more than I should.

(001)

Three-digit, parenthesized

Projects and primary entries. Zero-padded to three digits. Used when items form a numbered sequence or catalog.

(01)

Two-digit, parenthesized

Secondary entries, design decisions, gallery items. Two-digit padding for shorter lists or subordinate sequences.

01

Bare numeral

Stripped of parentheses for a quieter presence.

---

Em dash separator

Three hyphens rendered as a visual em dash. Separates metadata fields in inline entries: title --- category --- year.

Decisions

Texture & Details

Grain, Blur Orbs, Dot Grids

A persistent film-grain overlay (SVG noise texture at ~35% opacity) gives every surface the tactile quality of printed paper. Soft blur orbs (CSS blur filter at 80px, ~6% opacity) float behind content sections as atmospheric color washes, adding depth without competing with the content. A dot-grid pattern (24px spacing) references the graph paper of architectural sketches and appears as faint structural underpinning behind certain sections.

(02)

Color Palette

Parchment, Stone, Ink

The palette is deliberately restrained: a warm cream background (hsl 40 30% 96%) that references aged paper and natural fibers, paired with a near-black foreground (hsl 30 10% 15%) that reads softer than pure black. Muted tones (hsl 30 8% 50%) handle secondary information. No saturated accent colors---the warmth comes from the base tone itself, letting images provide all the color the page needs.

(03)

Layout & Grid

Restrained, Asymmetric, Breathing

Generous whitespace is treated as a material, not empty space. The layout uses a loose 12-column grid that allows for asymmetric placement---content rarely spans the full width. Projects stagger left-right across the grid to avoid rigid symmetry. The hero uses a deliberately offset composition where the headline anchors the lower-left while a small image floats top-right, creating diagonal tension across the viewport.

Structural Elements

Fine Rules, Dot Patterns, Blur Washes

Thin horizontal rules (0.5px) act as the primary structural device, referencing baseline grids of typeset print. The dot pattern evokes architectural graph paper. Blur wash echoes---blurred copies of images placed behind their sharp originals---create a sense of depth and atmosphere. Structural grid lines at 50% opacity appear in the mobile menu as horizontal dividers. These layered elements build visual depth while maintaining the handmade quality.

(05)

Atmosphere

Intimate, Editorial, Warm

The site draws from the tradition of archival documentation, botanical field studies, and conceptual art monographs. It aspires to feel like opening a well-made book in a quiet room---unhurried, considered, and personal. Every decision was made to serve warmth without sacrificing precision.
